The music on Tutankhamun is more about texture than melody harmony or even rhythm and counterpoint. With Mitchell turning 80 next year and still employed in academia its understandably slower nowadays is but a hook for a salute to the departed. As the Art Ensemble of Chicago AEOC without a drummer and with the addition of saxophonist Joseph Jarman took on an identity of its own Mitchells austere highbrow experiment was somewhat modified to interpret a more humane populist and even playful concept of music.
